This weekend, Swansea City will celebrate the achievements of the Wales Over-70s side, who were crowned world champions in their summer World Cup Tournament.

The World Cup Tournament was hosted at Cardiff University by Wales Veterans’ Football Association and welcomed teams from Canada, Demark, England, Germany, the USA and Australia.

The tournament featured former professionals, as well as a member of the Australia 1974 Fifa World Cup squad.

Wales O-70s recorded four wins in six group games, with their impressive record built on the foundations of a strong defence and the goalkeeping skills of former Swansea City schoolboys stopper Alan Meacham.

Those results saw them safely through to the semi-final where they met a strong England side.

Wales O70s penalty save

A 2-0 victory over the Three Lions, set up a final between the hosts and the team from the United States.

A goal against the run of play left Wales with it all to do, but an equaliser midway through the second half took the game to penalties.

It was a perfect shootout from the Dragons, who converted four of their spot-kicks to be crowed champions of the world.

For our fixture against Millwall on Saturday, the World Cup winners will be joining us at the Swansea.com Stadium with Meacham, as well one of the tournament organisers and key Wales player Terry Compton, plus top scorer Peter Morgan, all in attendance.
