Toshack highlights important week for Cup campaign
Cameron Toshack believes back-to-back games in the Premier League Cup will help Swansea City’s under-23s maintain focus in the competition.
The defending champions face Burnley at Fairwood training ground on Monday (1pm) before an away trip to Essex to play Colchester United at Weston Homes Community Stadium three days later.
Defeat against Newcastle in November was followed by an impressive 5-1 victory over Colchester before Christmas leaves the Swans third in Group D.
“This is an important week for us in this competition,” Toshack said.
“As holders it is vital that we give a good account of ourselves in these two games, perform well and fight to get results we need.
“Two games inside a week in this competition will focus our mind. If we do well and get results in these games it puts us in a great position to qualify from the group.”
The under-23s beat Reading at the Liberty Stadium to lift the Premier League Cup last season but must secure a top two finish to progress to the knockout stage of the competition.
Following a 3-3 draw away against Derby last Monday, the young Swans go into tomorrow’s game off the back of a five-game unbeaten run in Premier League 2.
“That momentum will be key for us,” Toshack continued.
“We will be looking to build on the positive results we have had in the league and maintain our unbeaten run.
“If we want to defend this cup we know we can’t be complacent in any game we play.
“There is still lots to play for so me must approach these games in the right manner.”
