Tom Carroll in contention for Cambridge clash

Steve Cooper says Tom Carroll could be in contention for first-team involvement in Swansea City’s Carabao Cup clash with Cambridge United.

The Swans take on the League Two Us at the Liberty Stadium on Wednesday night looking to book their place in the third round of the competition.

Carroll, 27, played 45 minutes for the under-23s against Aston Villa week, pulling on a Swans shirt in anger for the first time in 10 months after being beset by hip injury problems.

And, while head coach Cooper has made clear Swansea will not be taking any risks with Carroll’s fitness given the hard work he has done since undergoing surgery in the spring, he is considering including the midfielder in the midweek fixture.

“Tom is available, he has only played 45 minutes so we will have to be careful with him,” said Cooper.

“But I have said over the last few weeks that Tom is a player we want to get back to his level.

“He is a talented, technical player who we are pleased to have here.

“He has had a bad injury, so we have to be careful with his inclusion in training and games, but he is getting to the stage where he is building confidence in his health where he is close to playing.

“It was brilliant to get him on the pitch last week. He did some good things, but that almost didn’t matter.

“He needed to be back on a pitch and getting his geography again if you like, and it was great to see him do that.”
