Swansea City sign Rio Campbell
Swansea City have completed the signing of Rio Campbell on a two-and-a-half year professional contract, subject to international clearance, with the winger set to join the club's under-18 squad.
The 17-year-old, who was a free agent following his departure from Watford, has put pen to paper on a deal that will keep him in SA1 until 2022.
Campbell will link up with the Swans’ age-grade side and could make his debut in their Premier League South clash with Aston Villa this weekend.
The East Londoner arrives in South Wales with plenty of experience already under his belt.
He began his youth career with spells at Barnet and Charlton, before spending three years at Tottenham Hotspur.
Campbell then spent just over a year at Chelsea, where he made a single appearance for the under-18s at the back end of the 2017-18 season; scoring in a 2-2 draw with Arsenal.
The winger was also part of the Watford side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-finals last season; appearing as a late substitute in the narrow last-four defeat by eventual winners Liverpool at Anfield.
And having being snapped up by the Swans following his recent departure from the Hornets, he is looking forward to getting down to work.
“It means a lot to me to sign a professional contract with Swansea,” he said.
“It’s a great club when it comes to developing players. If you’re good enough, you’ve got a good chance of getting into the first team.
“Every day, I must strive towards the first-team environment. I’ll put my head down and work hard. If I don’t then there’s no way I will succeed or get to where I want.
“I must pour my heart out every time I step on the pitch and prove myself.
“The future’s bright, but I must keep going and use this contract as additional motivation.”
