Swansea City seal loan move for Chelsea defender Marc Guehi
Swansea City has completed the signing of Chelsea defender Marc Guehi on loan until the end of the season.
Guehi – who will wear the Swans number two jersey - trained with his new team-mates on Thursday and is available for selection for Sunday’s South Wales derby against Cardiff.
The 19-year-old, who plays primarily at centre-back but can also operate on either flank, previously worked with Swans boss Steve Cooper in the England age-grade setup.
Guehi was part of the side that secured Under-17 World Cup glory under Cooper in 2017, and he will link up with another member of that squad – Rhian Brewster – following the Liverpool forward’s arrival in SA1 earlier this week.
Like Brewster, who himself had a spell in the Chelsea academy, Guehi was on the scoresheet in the final of that tournament as England comprehensively beat Spain 5-2.
Born in the Ivory Coast, Guehi was signed by Chelsea at under-eight level and progressed through the Blues’ youth ranks, enjoying considerable success along the way.
He helped the Stamford Bridge club’s under-18s win a treble of trophies in 2017, and they went one better the following season as they sealed a quadruple, only failing to land the UEFA Youth Cup – in which they lost the final to Barcelona - in a remarkable campaign.
Signing a first professional deal in September 2017, he has progressed to the club’s under-19 and under-23 squads, and has won six caps for England at under-21 level.
This season he has made the first-team breakthrough at Chelsea, making his debut in the Carabao Cup win over Grimsby and going on to feature against Manchester United in the same competition.
