Swansea City saddened to learn of passing of 1964 FA Cup hero Jimmy McLaughlin
Swansea City is saddened to learn of the passing of the club’s former player Jimmy McLaughlin at the age of 83.
The former striker had two spells on the books with the Swans, between 1963 and 1967 and 1972 and 1974.
But it is for that first stint in Swansea colours that he will be best remembered, with the Northern Ireland international scoring a famous opening goal in the 2-1 FA Cup quarter-final win over Liverpool at Anfield in 1964 (pictured above).
In total McLaughlin – who became a player-coach on his return to Swansea in the early 1970s - made 151 league appearances for the Swans, scoring 47 goals.
He won 12 caps for his country, and also featured for Derry City, Birmingham City, Shrewsbury Town, Peterborough United and Dundalk during his playing days.
He went on to move into coaching and he would win eight League of Ireland titles with four different clubs, securing an historic treble with Derry City in 1989.
Everyone at Swansea City sends their sincere condolences to Jimmy’s family and friends at this sad time.
