Swansea City defeat Swindon Town in latest pre-season friendly
Goals from Nathan Wood, Joel Piroe, Liam Cullen and a Josh Thomas brace saw Swansea City continue their pre-season preparations with a 5-0 win over Swindon Town at Fairwood.
Defender Wood opened the scoring when he steered in a Josh Key pull-back just before the interval.
Strikers Piroe and Thomas then struck in quick succession early in the second half, with the latter later going on to complete his double, after Cullen had finished at the back post, while the Swans kept a third clean sheet in a row.
New signing Jerry Yates got a planned 30 minutes under his belt, with Key playing 45 minutes against the Robins.
On a blustery afternoon, the first half-chance fell to the Swans but Yates could not quite reach Azeem Abdulai’s cross.
Swindon’s Jake Cain fired into the side netting from a corner before Andy Fisher tipped a Tyrese Shade cross over the bar.
Swansea had the next big chance on the half hour, Jay Fulton seeing an effort cleared off the line after Yates and Key had combined to win a corner.
A few minutes later and Thomas could not quite take Jamie Paterson’s through ball in his stride.
But the hosts took the lead two minutes before the break when Key tricked his way to the byline and found Wood for the defender to net from close range.
Early in the second half Piroe worked the keeper with a header from a Fulton cross, but the Dutchman made no mistake when Paterson’s through ball sent him through to find the far corner of the net.
Moments later Thomas grabbed his first as he ran on to a Fulton pass to slot home with aplomb.
Cullen then got in on the act as he tapped in from a Thomas lay-off.
And Thomas sealed his brace with another composed finish after his run in behind was once again picked out to round off a satisfying afternoon for Michael Duff’s team.
