Russell Martin | We will learn a lot from Bristol City draw
Russell Martin was pleased with the character his side showed in coming from behind to take a point at Bristol City, but wants Swansea City to learn the lessons of a sluggish opening 20 minutes at Ashton Gate.
Olivier Ntcham’s superb volley, which found the net via a small deflection, saw the Swans continue their fine run of Championship form.
They had trailed to Tommy Conway’s first-half goal, and had needed Steven Benda to make a pair of excellent saves prior to the opener.
The visitors got better as the game went on, and secured a point when Ntcham took aim after a corner had been cleared as far as the Cameroon international on the edge of the area.
During a frantic finish neither side could find a winner, as the Swans extended their sequence to just one defeat in their last eight games.
“I am really pleased with the character shown by the players,” said head coach Martin.
“But we were really disappointed with the first 20 minutes, and it is a brilliant opportunity for us to learn from that.
“We have a lot of young guys and I think the emotion of Sunday (victory over Cardiff), took its toll and maybe a few of the young ones over-celebrated a bit.
“It is an important message and learning experience for us.
“The sort of run we have been on causes its own problems because teams are keen to start well and show their intent against us.
“We were not clean enough, we did not have enough intensity and we did not move the ball quickly enough.
“I was disappointed with that, but the way we bounced back after the goal kicked us into life a little bit.
“We did not create a huge amount in the first half, we had some good moments but the conviction and quality was not there.
“But they stayed brave and I am really proud of that. I think this time last season we would have lost that game.
“By the end of the game we were disappointed we had not won it because we showed more energy and intensity and I think if it goes on longer we win it.
“But any point in this division is valuable, particularly away from home against a team who are really fighting.”
