Russell Martin | We really respect Coventry, this is a chance to show what we are about
Russell Martin has spoken of his gratitude to Coventry City manager Mark Robins for the support he has given the Swansea City boss, but knows it will not stop either man going all out for three points at the Swansea.com Stadium this afternoon.
The Swans host the Sky Blues looking to build on memorable back-to-back victories over Bristol City and Cardiff City, while the visitors are desperate for points in their efforts to try and force their way into the play-off spots.
Martin and his team have come through a difficult run of results with renewed vigour and positivity, but the former Scotland international has revealed how Robins – a manager he has previously spoken of his admiration and respect for – called him up to offer his support to a young coach.
It is a gesture the Swans boss greatly appreciated, even though the niceties will have to pause when 3pm rolls around.
“Coventry are a club that have been with their coaching staff for a long time, they are clear in what they do, how they play and how they recruit,” said Martin.
“They had a tough start to the season in so many ways but they stuck with the people they believe in, and we have so much respect for Mark and his staff.
“Mark reached out to me earlier this season when times were tough. He called me up and I really appreciated that, he wanted to help a young manager and I am so grateful for that.
“I really respect him, (assistant) Adi (Viveash) and Dennis (Lawrence).
“We really want to beat them, but they have done an outstanding job.
“They will want to put things right after losing to Stoke last weekend but they are s till in the play-off mix.
“It’s an opportunity for us to show how good a side we can be against a really good team.”
