Chivers v Cardiff Met

Stacey John-Davis' penalty and Chloe Chivers' long range strike made it conseuctive wins for Swansea City Women as they beat Cardiff Met Women.

With the game goalless heading into the closing stages, John-Davis stepped up to the spot with 73 minutes gone to break the deadlock.

Chivers would add the second let on, a thunderous free-kick flying into the top left corner to secure all three points.

It was no less than the Swans deserved and they had been on the front foot from the off, when they started strongly and had the chance to take the lead early.

Aimee Deacon was the provider for the first big chance when her curling cross caused problems for Met ‘keeper Carys Gittens, who fumbled it into the path of Katy Hosford. The captain’s effort struck Gittens in the face, and she remained down for an extended period but was fortunately able to carry on.

Hosford was soon involved again, splitting the defence with a through ball to Taite Trivett, whose cross could not find another white shirt in the area.

Jess Williams was next to get on the end of another Hosford ball, but her header couldn’t beat Gittens in the Met goal.

The Swans were having a lot of joy down the flanks, and a barrage of crosses kept the pressure on Gittens, who just about managed to parry away Trivett’s ball for a corner.

The keeper would deny Sophie Brisland-Hancocks from the resulting corner.

But the onslaught from the home side persisted as Trivett and Williams both went close to putting them ahead, while Hosford went closest of all when her cross grazed the top of the crossbar.

Swansea thought they had finally broken the deadlock on 39 minutes when Nia Jones produced a stunning volley over the keeper courtesy of an Emily Richards cross, but the assistant referee was quick to rule Trivett offside as she was in the line of sight of Gittens.

Met had barely threatened but striker India Shanahan found herself in on goal as a result of a quick counter-attach just before half time. However, a heavy touch forced her out wide and her eventual shot made for a simple save for Charlotte Haynes.

The second half saw more of the same, with the well drilled Swans suffocating Met and offering them minimal time on the ball.

A hectic period in the middle of the half saw a flurry of chances come agonisingly close, but the scores remained level until Deacon picked up the ball on the halfway line and burst through the defence before being brought down in the box.

John-Davis was handed the ball for the spot-kick and converted with ease to the left of the ‘keeper, who was rooted to the spot.

John-Davis came close to doubling the advantage a few minutes later but her shot narrowly cleared the crossbar.

Swansea kept turning the screw, and eventually substitute Chivers sent a thunderous long range free-kick into the top corner to seal the win.
