Swansea city Ladies celebrate a goal

Swansea City Ladies maintained their 100 per cent start to the season after beating Abergavenny 3-0 at Llandarcy.

The Welsh Premier Women’s League leaders went into the break with a 1-0 lead courtesy of a Lauren Smith header in the closing stages of the first half.

A second goal of the match for Smith and a close-range volley from sub Chloe Chivers, who scored a last-gasp winner in the League Cup tie against Abergavenny last week, safely sealed the three points for Ian Owen’s side.

Swansea started positively and created a number of chances in the opening 20 minutes through Kelly Adams, Katy Hosford and Smith.

With 16 minutes on the clock Stacey John-Davis had a real chance to open the score, but she was denied by a great save by Aber’s Charlotte Hastings in a one-on-one situation.

Despite the pressure, Swansea were given a scare when Ffion David was through on goal but Shaunna Jenkins came to the Swans’ rescue with a last-ditch challenge.

John-Davis then went close to breaking the deadlock, but she could only divert Sarah Adams’ cross narrowly wide of the right post.

The Swans went even closer soon after as Adams tried her luck and saw her looping effort bounce off the crossbar.

The pressure paid off in the dying moments of the first half as Ellie Lake’s cross into the area found the head of Smith, who buried it in the bottom corner.

Smith went close to bagging a second but Hastings was able to gather her shot across goal at the second time of asking with Emma Beynon lurking.

But Smith’s persistence paid off in the 76th minute as she netted her second of the afternoon. After a scramble in the box, the American popped up in space in the penalty area and slotted it home from close range.

Five minutes later, Chivers increased the deficit after she volleyed home Hosford’s corner as the Wales international took her tally to two in as many games.

Next up, the Swans are in FAW Women’s Cup action as they welcome Aberdare Town to Llandarcy on Sunday (2pm).
