Report: Swans U23s 3 Leicester City U23s 1
George Byers scored twice as Swansea City Under-23s got back to winning ways in Premier League 2 with an impressive 3-1 victory over leaders Leicester City at Landore.
Byers was on target in each half to take his league tally to seven goals this season, while Kenji Gorre also found the net as he claimed his 12th of the campaign in all competitions.
Sam Hughes scored a consolation for the visitors and the young Swans finished the game with 10 men following Mael Davies’ dismissal, but they held on to move back up to fourth in the Premier League 2 table.
Gorre returned to the starting XI in one of four changes made to the side that began the 2-0 defeat at Everton last time out.
Steven Benda made his first league start in goal, while Marco Dulca and Botti Biabi were also brought back into the team.
Both sides had chances inside the opening quarter of an hour with Byers shooting just wide for the hosts, while Benda did well to tip Josh Gordon’s deflected strike over the crossbar.
But the Swans made the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Biabi provided a neat lay-off to the edge of the area for Byers to arrow an effort brilliantly into the roof of the net.
The hosts doubled their lead in the second minute of first-half stoppage time when Gorre was allowed time to take aim and drill beyond the dive of Max Bramley.
Gorre went close again 10 minutes into the second period as he raced at the heart of the Leicester defence, but his low effort was pushed away by Bramley.
However, the winger was instrumental when the Swans did make it 3-0 in the 71st minute.
He showed great vision out wide to pick out Byers in the box, and the midfielder found the bottom corner with a precise header.
The Swans were denied a clean sheet when Hughes volleyed home from a corner with nine minutes remaining.
That set up a nervous finish, during which Davies was shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Liandro Martis.
But that could not take anything away from the Swans' display.
