Swansea City Ladies moved four points ahead of Cardiff Met at the top of the Welsh Women’s Premier League table with a 2-0 win at Abergavenny.

Ian Owen’s side took a 1-0 lead into the break courtesy of Stacey John-Davis diverting Emma Beynon’s shot home with a flicked finish.

Tija Richardson doubled the lead late on in the second half to seal the win as Swansea increased the gap between themselves and Cardiff Met at the top of the table.

Abergavenny began positively and wasted no time in testing Deanna Lewis after the keeper’s misplaced pass welcomed an opportunity for Amy Thrupp.

After a slightly apprehensive start Swansea began to get a foothold of the match and created a chance for Katy Hosford but the winger dragged her shot wide of the mark.

Soon after, Hosford went agonisingly close to opening the score after her low shot from a free-kick was deflected off the wall and cannoned off the woodwork.

The deadlock was broken with 20 minutes on the clock after John-Davis got the crucial touch to turn Beynon’s shot from deep inside the penalty area home.

Lauren Davies nearly bagged the equaliser for the home side but her free-kick from the edge of the box cannoned off the crossbar.

Swansea were in full control of the second half and applied a massive amount of pressure on their opponents whilst keeping Abergavenny at bay.

John-Davis was in the hunt for her second goal of the afternoon and when she attempted to sweep home Sarah Adams’ free-kick her effort rose over.

The Swans did seal the win with nine minutes left to play after Richardson was fully committed to get on the end of Sarah Adams’ corner to find the back of the net.

Swansea City Ladies are back in action on Sunday as they face Connah’s Quay Nomads at Llanidloes FC in the semi-final of the FAW Women’s Cup (2pm).
