Proud Wright and Grey hail "massive achievement"
Anthony Wright and Jon Grey have hailed Swansea City Under-19s after securing their record-breaking 10th consecutive FAW Youth Cup title on Wednesday.
The young Swans continued their magnificent record in the competition following a 2-1 victory over TNS at Park Avenue – home of Aberystwyth Town.
Goals from Josh Thomas and Simon Paulet did the trick as the club maintained their hold on the trophy.
Wright admits that, every year, the pressure is on the Swans not to be the side to end their remarkable run, but was delighted with how his players stepped up to the plate.
“It’s a really pleasing moment for the players and the club as a whole,” the under-19s’ coach said.
“Winning this competition 10 years in a row is a massive achievement for the club and a record we are very proud of.
“The longer the run goes on, it provides that little bit of added pressure for the players, but we’re more than confident in their ability to deliver for us.
“This evening, we told them to try and not be the side to let the run end. We know there will come a time when it does but, thankfully, it’s not this season.”
Tonight’s victory was also the third in a row that the under-19s have enjoyed under the guidance of Wright and Grey.
Grey knows the pressure of defending the crown will continue to rise, but is hopeful the Swans’ hold on the trophy won’t end any time soon.
“It’s our hat-trick and we’re delighted to get another win – obviously, 10 in a row is a terrific feat,”
“The cup games are always so difficult; they’re a one-off occasion when anyone can beat anyone.
“Fortunately, we’ve won again tonight and who knows how long we can keep this going for?
“Each year, the standard of players we’re coming up against is getting better and better, so we just want to keep our run going for as long as possible.”
Due to broadcasting regulations, we are unable to show highlights from the game until Saturday evening.
