Preview | Portsmouth v Swansea City

1st January
First team
Fratton Park

Swansea City will seek to carry their form at the tail end of 2024 into the start of 2025 when they face Portsmouth at Fratton Park for the first time since 2011 this afternoon (3pm).

Luke Williams' side rounded off the last calendar year with back-to-back home wins over Queens Park Rangers and Luton Town, and will want to start the new one on the right note.

Their hosts, meanwhile, will be hoping to climb out of the relegation zone on home turf, where they have taken 13 of their 20 points so far this season.

Team news

Goncalo Franco

Swansea are waiting on the fitness of Goncalo Franco after the Portuguese midfielder saw a handful of the teeth in his lower jaw displaced in a nasty collision with Mark McGuinness against Luton.

Josh Ginnelly, Ollie Cooper, Sam Parker, Joe Allen and Kristian Pedersen are currently sidelined for the Swans.

Pre-match views

Luke Williams

Luke Williams: “We have a tough schedule coming up, but obviously we are in good spirits after these two wins.

“Still, we have to recover correctly and prepare again, and we have to be ready for a very tough game.

“We have to continue to try and perform in this way that we have performed in the last two games and hopefully we can come out of a busy Christmas period in a good place.

“Fratton Park is a very tough place to play and we are facing a team who I think have been starting to find their feet in the Championship.

“We know we will be in for a very tough game.”

John Mousinho: “The mood in the dressing room was naturally really low (after the loss at Bristol City) and that’s the way it should be – I don’t want anyone to be pleased with that.

“I have to pick the bones out of the match and I’m confident we’ll see a reaction, but there’s no reason why we can’t play away like we do at Fratton Park.

"It’s a really poor result and performance and a disappointing way to follow up a couple of positive displays from us."

Remember the last time?

Leon Britton Portsmouth 2011

Swansea City played out a goalless draw at Portsmouth on their last visit to Fratton Park in April 2011, a result which all-but ended their automatic promotion hopes in a year when they would eventually go up via the play-offs.

In a game of few clear chances, Aaron Mokoena sent a free header wide of the target for the hosts.

The Swans had a good spell of late pressure, but Scott Sinclair and Stephen Dobbie were unable to convert.
