'This must be only the start'
Alfie Mawson insists West Brom must be only the start for Swansea City as Paul Clement’s men bid to climb the Premier League table.
The Swans are off the bottom after Wilfried Bony’s late goal secured a 1-0 victory against West Brom yesterday.
But Clement’s side are well aware that there is plenty of work to do as they look to haul themselves clear of the relegation scrap.
The Swans remain 19th in the table, with only 12 points on the board from their first 16 league games of the season.
And they face a difficult challenge next as Manchester City head to the Liberty on Wednesday night.
Nevertheless, Mawson has urged his team-mates to do all they can to build some momentum.
“We want West Brom to be a turning point,” the central defender said.
“Wednesday will be a tough game, but we have to show the same sort of belief and commitment we showed against West Brom and then we will aim to topple a very strong City side.
“We need to build on the West Brom win and that means doing the basics again.
“Wednesday will be more about concentration, but we are ready to go now off the back of a good performance.”
The Swans were the more threatening side against West Brom, although another game of few clear-cut chances looked to be heading for a draw until Bony lashed home from point-blank range.
Clement’s side ought to have won more comfortably, but Tammy Abraham blew a golden chance to double their lead right at the end.
That did not matter, for Bony’s goal was enough to secure a first win since Huddersfield were beaten almost two months ago.
“We are relieved,” Mawson added.
“The win has been a long time coming. We felt the victory over Huddersfield was going to be the turning point, but it was not to be.
“But the lads were brilliant against west Brom and Wilf has come up trumps with the goal, which we really needed.
“The fans have been very good to us. Understandably they have been frustrated and we have been frustrated too.
“But we were all happy with the West Brom result and now we have to build on it.”
