Montero's back in Swans fold

Jefferson Montero has joined the preparations for Swansea City’s Championship opener at Sheffield United after spending last season away from the Liberty on loan.

Montero is training with Graham Potter’s squad and is focusing on reclaiming his place in the Swans side.

The Ecuador international had been due back in Wales for the start of pre-season training, but his return was delayed due to complications over his work permit.

But Montero has come back in good physical condition and could be in contention for the trip to Bramall Lane on August 4.

“We are pleased to have Jefferson with us,” said Potter.

“I am well aware of his ability and what he can bring to the team. He is back training with us and it is now a question of building up his match fitness.”

A potent attacking weapon when fit and firing, Montero was allowed to leave the Swans on loan by Paul Clement last summer.

But the speedy winger saw his time with La Liga club Getafe ruined by a succession of injury problems.

As a result, he joined Ecuadorian club Emelec on a sub-loan in the January transfer window, and he enjoyed a happier stint back in his homeland.

Now the 28-year-old is looking to rekindle his Swans career, having played 72 times for the club since joining back in 2014.

Montero is set to play some part as Potter’s men continue their pre-season campaign with a behind-closed-doors friendly against League Two side Newport County on Wednesday.
