Matt Grimes | We want to apologise to the fans after "gut-wrenching" derby defeat
Skipper Matt Grimes has apologised to Swansea City's supporters after the “gut-wrenching” defeat to Cardiff City in the south Wales derby.
A scrappy first half had ended goalless, but the game turned in Cardiff's favour when Ollie Tanner scored moments after coming on as a second-half substitute.
And it was Tanner who was brought down in the penalty area to allow Aaron Ramsey to score the home side's second from the spot.
It was a first derby defeat in five for the Swans, and Grimes says he and the entire team know the performance was not good enough.
“We just want to say sorry,” said Grimes.
“We’ve had such a good record in this fixture and we just weren’t good enough.
“I don’t think it was a lack of effort. I think the lads gave it a lot, but moments of quality won them the game.
“We were nowhere near good enough in the final third and we didn’t create anything of note.
“It’s a gut-wrenching loss, but we have another game on Tuesday so we have to dust ourselves down and go again.”
