Matt Grimes | We need to keep building our performances
Matt Grimes believes the future is bright for Swansea City under new boss Luke Williams, but feels patience will be key.
The Swans captain has praised Williams’ possession-based style, and is confident supporters will start seeing the kind of football the club had become synonymous with, although the experienced midfielder knows there is plenty of learning and hard work ahead on the training pitch to make sure Swansea become the team they want to be under the head coach.
Williams' side host the Championship’s form team Southampton this weekend at the beginning of a run of six matches which include fixtures against the league’s current top four sides.
But the Swans skipper is embracing the challenge ahead and is looking forward to the latest chapter at the club.
“We’re right at the start of the process,” he explained.
“It’s going to take time to implement what we want. We just have to be brave and play exactly the way that the gaffer wants us to play.
“We just need to build performance on performance and keep making strides. Hopefully, in a few games, we’ll look like the team that everyone wants us to look like.
“It’s been a tough period, but (assistant head coach) Alan Sheehan was fantastic with us, and we picked up some decent results and created a good bit of form.
“But now we’re slowly building under the new gaffer and we want to take that into Saturday.
“He’s a possession-based manager, the way he works, and the detail he goes into with each player and each unit is second to none, and we’re very excited about what’s to come.
“It suits me to play in a possession team and that’s part of why I’ve been at Swansea for so long. In my opinion that’s the best way to play the game, so we’re really excited.”
The reverse fixture against the Saints proved an extremely tough afternoon for the Swans as they fell to a heavy defeat at St Mary’s.
The Swans started the Boxing Day clash on the front foot and created two big chances before conceding the opener, but Grimes admitted the squad showed some naivety in the second period which allowed the game to get away from them.
He is keen to make sure there is no repeat this time round.
“It was a frustrating and horrible day,” he admitted.
“I thought they were so clinical and we were a little bit naïve, and we want to try to rectify that.”
