Martin praises assured Swansea City debut from Finley Burns
Russell Martin sang the praises of Swansea City debutant Finley Burns after the defender’s impressive showing in the 3-1 victory over Bristol City at the Swansea.com Stadium.
Burns, who signed on loan from Manchester City in January, played 75 minutes in front of the Jack Army and impressed the Swans boss as he made the first senior league appearance of his fledgling career.
It proved a great occasion for the 18-year-old to make his first appearance for Swansea, as he helped seal a first league double over Bristol since 1958.
And Martin is excited about the defender’s progression in the remainder of his time in SA1.
“I thought he was great. I thought he showed what is going to come,” said the Swans boss.
“The change wasn’t anything to do with his performance, it was about him fatiguing in his first Championship game with the adrenaline and the energy.
“I was really pleased with Fin. He has come in and really impressed everyone and I think for a debut in this league, his mentality, his quality, his willingness to defend and compete was pleasing.
“We have got a really exciting prospect on our hands and now it is up to us to develop him and make sure he understands every detail.
“He has only been here for three weeks, and we have had a lot of games in that period of time.
“With more time on the training pitch he will get better and better.
“He is fitting in so well into the squad as a character, which is so important.
“We are really, really happy with him and hopefully today will give him a springboard to really kick on from.”
