Martin compliments Steven Benda mentality after key saves
Russell Martin felt the “massive” saves Steven Benda made to help Swansea City earn a draw at Bristol City were a sign of the mentality the German keeper has exhibited this season.
While Benda could not prevent Tommy Conway putting the hosts ahead at Ashton Gate, he had already pulled off two excellent stops that would prove crucial in the final analysis.
Firstly he somehow managed to push Antoine Semenyo’s point-blank effort to safety, and then showed his ability to deny Nahki Wells with his legs.
Olivier Ntcham would go on to earn the Swans a point as his volley found the far corner, but head coach Martin was keen to make sure Benda’s contribution was not overlooked.
"Steven Benda, I love what he's done and how far he's come and what he's done since he's come back into the team," said Martin.
“The saves were massive. The first one was incredible. But it was not only what he did without the ball in terms of those saves, he wasn't very busy in the second half, but what he did with the ball in the second half was outstanding.
"He's become really important and I'm just really proud of him and pleased for him. He has a brilliant mentality. He's getting better with every game and hopefully he can continue and he has Andy Fisher really supporting and competing with him.”
