Luke Williams | We want a performance that reflects our identity as a club
Luke Williams will urge his Swansea City side to produce a performance in the image of the club’s best playing traditions when they face Cardiff City in the south Wales derby this afternoon (3pm).
The Swans host the first derby of the season – this being the first league meeting between the sides played in August since 1987 – having enjoyed the bragging rights in the fixture for much of the last decade.
The most recent game saw the Swans run out 2-0 winners, in a performance head coach Williams described as a benchmark showing in the development of his team.
Now, with the latest chapter in a 112-year rivalry on the horizon, he wants his players to build on the manner of the mix of control and attacking threat that characterised wins over Gillingham and Preston North End.
“Our best strategy in every game we play is to try to remember what we are and how we like to play football,” said Williams.
“We have seen in the last two performances more of the identity that we love at Swansea.
“We had the control but combined that with a lot of attacking option. We have scored six goals in two games.
“We had long spells where we moved the ball to each other with care. That’s what we want.
“We have to be the shiniest, best version of that as a bare minimum because we know this is a cup game. They just give points at the end of this one, too.”
