Luke Williams | We showed our quality and our grit
The Swans boss had challenged his side to produce the energy and intensity of some of their recent home performances on their travels, after feeling his side had been overwhelmed in the first half of defeats at Middlesbrough and West Brom.
And he got the response he wanted as the Swans flew out of the traps and dominated the opening half hour to deservedly lead through Liam Cullen’s close-range finish, and Oliie Cooper’s strike following good build-up and a driving run from the Wales midfielder.
Jack Rudoni quickly replied for the hosts but the Swans stood firm – even dealing with a stoppage of play following a second-half rainstorm punctuated by flashes of lightning – to secure all three points and make it back-to-back wins.
“The conditions were absolutely incredible at times as well, so we saw everything in that performance that makes a good team.
“I think I have been pretty tough and direct with the group on our away performances, they are not made of sugar so they have taken that on board and this is a great example of that.
“Coventry are a good team, they have great support inside this arena, but the players controlled themselves really, really well and put themselves in a good position.
“When we had to come off I think everyone is a bit anxious, because you can worry about switching off and the players are a bit anxious because they don’t know what is going on, and I think some of them thought the game had been postponed.
“If you allow your mind to drift it can be tough when it restarts, but the players did great and I am pleased that did not knock us out of our rhythm.”
Williams also thanked the travelling Jacks who cheered on his side through all weather, with players, staff and fans sharing the joy of an away day win after the full-time whistle.
“That’s the best thing ever, to celebrate with them,” he said.
“They were incredible as always, but those are the moments you cherish so much because we know what it means to support this club and follow this club.”
