Luke Williams | We know a derby win means so much more than three points
Swansea City head coach Luke Williams says the feeling of winning a south Wales derby will always be worth more than the three points on offer because of what it means to the supporters and community.
The Swans host Cardiff City at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday having won four of the last five derbies on home turf.
Williams was part of one of those successes, having been assistant head coach for an emphatic 3-0 win over Cardiff in October 2021, inspired by a goal and two assists from Jamie Paterson.
The Swans boss has fond memories of that result, performance and the feeling in the stadium that day.
All of which means he knows that, while it is the usual three league points on offer, the significance of the outcome resonates far beyond that.
“The points matter, but the game matters more than three points because the feeling we can give to our people is worth at least one more than that,” he said.
“I know we won’t be given four points on the board if we win, but we will take the imaginary extra point for ourselves if we do.
“We will use whatever we can to be motivated to make one more tackle or one more run, to put the body on the line.
“We will use whatever we can use to give us the energy to do everything possible.
“We have to be able to play with freedom, and without too much tension.
“But there’s a cocktail because you need to be on high alert and concentrate and focus, then find the moments to express yourself and make the big actions. That’s the key.”
