Luke Williams | We had the chances, but were not clinical enough

Head coach Luke Williams was frustrated after watching Swansea City’s lack of a clinical edge prove costly in their 1-0 defeat to Plymouth Argyle.

Morgan Whittaker scored the only goal of the game for the visitors at the Swansea.com Stadium.

But the hosts had more than enough chances to have taken a positive result on the club’s dedicated Maggie’s matchday.

Ben Cabango, Jamie Paterson, Jerry Yates and Charlie Patino were unable to finish good opportunities, while Liam Cullen struck the woodwork during the closing stages.

Swansea had 70 per cent of the ball and registered 19 shots on goal, and Williams admitted a lack of composure and a momentary lapse of concentration had proved crucial.

“We’re very frustrated. I think we created enough chances to win the game, but we have to be more clinical,” said the Swans boss.

“I think we lost concentration for the action which led to the corner, and then we lost concentration again from the corner for their goal. We paid the full price.

“We lacked composure in the final third and then, if you have 70 per cent of the ball, you’re denying a lot of opportunities for the other team because they don’t have the ball.

“But, when they get an action and you don’t defend it correctly, then even one per cent is enough to win the game. You have to concentrate for the entire game.

“We can also play quicker to create even more chances and then, even if you’re not clinical – if you create even more chances – maybe it’s enough to win.

“We should combine being quick, being able to play smoothly and combine that with being more clinical and then we’ll have a good formula.”

Plymouth home

Williams handed Ronald a full debut, while the Brazilians fellow new signings Charles Sagoe Jr and Przemyslaw Placheta made their Swansea bows off the bench.

All three made positive contributions, with Ronald proving particularly eye-catching with his pace and trickery causing Plymouth numerous problems.

“Ronald put a lot of crosses in and that’s what I want. He stretched the pitch and created space for other players,” said Williams.

“I don’t think he could have done much more today, and I think he deserved to have at least one assist.

“I thought Przemyslaw looked really quick. When he came on, we started to get crosses in off the left because of his presence.

“I thought it was harder for Ollie (Cooper) to find the space and deliver because that’s not a natural position for him.

“So we got crosses off from both sides in the second half. I really wanted us to bring that in in the window.

“With Charles Jr we can see that he’s a young guy, he needed a bit more time probably, but he’s made a good first impression.”
