Luke Williams | A point was what we deserved
Swansea City head coach Luke Williams felt a draw was a fair result after watching his side keep a fourth clean sheet of the season against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
In a contest of few clear chances, the Swans struck the woodwork through Jay Fulton in the early stages, and then saw Ronald denied by Owls keeper James Beadle at the end of a sweeping attack in the second half.
Wednesday – unbeaten in 17 midweek league games on home turf – were also denied by a post as Pol Valentin’s effort cannoned wide for a goal-kick, with Swans keeper Lawrence Vigouroux not having a save of note to make.
Williams acknowledged it was not the most exciting of games, but was pleased to see his side pick up a positive result on their travels.
“It wasn’t a classic, but this is a very, very tough place to play. We had to cope with a lot of direct play and the atmosphere here and I think we deserved our point,” he said.
“We certainly had a tough game, we coped well enough but it was not a great game by any means.
“There were opportunities for us, and I think that is the difference for us at the moment. If we can take some of those big chances then we will have a very different season on our hands, and that is the challenge for us as a group.
“We have shown we can handle the ball, and we can control games, and we are prepared to be tough and defend our goal.
“Now we need to be more ruthless in the opposition box.”
Williams made five changes for the second match in a three-game week, with the clash in south Yorkshire coming hot on the heels of the weekend trip to Blackburn.
Kyle Naughton, Jay Fulton, Myles Peart-Harris, Azeem Abdulai and Zan Vipotnik all came into the side, and the Swans boss believes some of the newer faces in his squad will have taken a lot from the night.
“I think those players will benefit hugely, and this is really important for me.
“We need to get this squad up to speed, because we are going to need everybody chipping in, and we are going to need competition.
“So I am happy with the guys who came in, I am happy with the guys who came off the bench.
“I want this squad to understand that they need to be ready, they need to be together. It’s an easy thing to say, but the head coach making changes and giving them opportunities should be proof that if you train well and are committed to everything, your chance will come.”
