Luke Williams | The players needed that run-out
Head coach Luke Williams felt his Swansea City side had benefited from getting a competitive run-out under their belts after starting their pre-season fixtures with victory over Swindon.
The Swans ran out 3-1 winners in the behind-closed-doors friendly at Fairwood, with Liam Cullen, Matt Grimes and Mykola Kuharevich on the scoresheet.
Cullen finished a slick move early on before Grimes struck from the spot when Ollie Cooper was fouled in the box.
Kuharevich bundled in a third shortly after Jaxon Brown had pulled a goal back for Swindon and, while Williams knows there is plenty of hard work ahead, he was encouraged by elements of what he saw.
“It was needed because the players have been working very hard. I think they needed to go and play against live opposition,” said the Swans boss.
“It was a very good exercise for both teams, so we are happy with that.
“They’ve done a lot of double sessions, so I think there’s been a lot of frustration for the players to release on the opposition today.
“They gave a good account of themselves in terms of how hard they were prepared to work and some of the ideas we have put into training.
“The two periods were quite different. I felt the first half was very impressive, and the second half was a bit more difficult for us, but it means there are things we can look at to try and help us when we strip the game down to show the players in the video room.
“We have everything to learn from now.”
