Luke Williams | The performance was not what we wanted, we will take the point
Head coach Luke Williams admitted his Swansea City side had not delivered the performance they wanted at Sheffield Wednesday, but was pleased to come away with a point from the 1-1 draw at Hillsborough.
Jamal Lowe netted an equaliser with 14 minutes remaining against the Owls, sweeping home his eighth goal of the season after a Harry Darling header had fallen for him in the box.
The Swans had controlled most of the first half, but fell behind when Bailey Cadamarteri finished from close range at the far post.
The second half proved a more open affair, and Williams acknowledged his side had suffered at times during that period, but was happy to see the effort levels from his players get a reward.
“It was a tough afternoon, in the first half we controlled the game quite well, and we managed to quiet the crowd here and I think we created some anxiety for them,” he said.
“But we were unable to make any clean actions to score, so we can improve there. Out of possession in the first half the intensity was there, but with the ball there was not quite enough of that.
“There is frustration to concede from a set-piece, and then in the second half the game becomes a bit more like basketball because we had to push really hard to get back into the game.
“Then we were pushing to try and win, because we don’t want to come here and not go to try and win and settle for a draw.
“But when it became more open, it brought the crowd back into the game and they caused us a lot of problems.
“We did not cope too well in that last 20 minutes of the game, so it was not a top performance from us, for sure.
“But to come here and get a point, we are probably happy even though I would have preferred all three. The performance was not there today, but the effort was there from the players.”
Williams also had words of praise for goalscorer Lowe and keeper Carl Rushworth, with the latter making a trio of key saves late in the game.
Lowe, meanwhile, now has two goals in two games following his clincher in the south Wales derby against Cardiff City, and the Swans boss says the Jamaica international is giving him a selection dilemma.
“Jamal is giving us a headache, no doubt,” he said.
“He is such a gifted player and he did brilliantly because he reacted so well to stay calm and finish the action off.
“He got the one in the Cardiff game where he showed so much quality and so much composure. He is a brilliant player and he is giving me a really good problem.
“And Carl is top, for a lot of the game he was not particularly required, but he did his job brilliantly well.”
