Luke Williams praised Joe Allen’s wholehearted efforts for Swansea City after the midfielder popped up to score a last-gasp equaliser against West Bromwich Albion.

With the Swans trailing 1-0 to a Tom Fellows’ strike, substitute Allen – making his return following a short spell out through injury – guided a glancing header into the far corner of the net from Ronald’s volleyed cross in stoppage time.

It gave Swansea a share of the spoils as they rounded off a hectic festive fixture schedule, and saw them score a dramatic late goal for the second home game in a row following Myles Peart-Harris’ winner against Luton Town.

And, while Williams admitted Allen may not have been an obvious candidate to grab a goal, he knew the Wales international’s quality and energy would be important additions during the closing stages.

“I don’t think I would deserve any credit for putting Joe Allen on, he is just a brilliant player,” said Williams.

“It’s more about the balance of the team, and the timing because we know how good he is.

“Him scoring a header might be a bit unusual, but you know that whatever situation you put Joe in he is going to apply himself.

“He is brave enough to try and do everything, and I think that if you look at the move for the goal, his touch in the middle of the pitch when it is really tight is so smooth. He rolls the ball out the other side and that starts the build-up to the goal.

“It’s hard to say how great we think it is, and we are fortunate to have him.”
