Liam Cullen loving deeper role after latest goal contribution
Liam Cullen is relishing his deeper role for Swansea City, and hopes he can continue his current rich vein of form.
The Wales international was on the scoresheet again in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle.
Cullen timed his run to meet Myles Peart-Harris’ superb cross and fire home his fifth goal of the season at Home Park.
That goal put the Swans 2-0 up, before the visitors were forced to defend stoutly at the end after the hosts had pulled a goal back.
Cullen now has three goals and two assists in his last five Championship games, and five and three in six games for club and country if you include his man-of-the-match display for Wales against Iceland last month.
For the Swans, the academy product has been tasked with playing behind the lead line in recent weeks, and feels the position really plays to his strength.
“I am playing with a lot of confidence at the moment, I am really, really enjoying my football,” he said. "
“I am playing a bit deeper at the moment, almost between an eight and a 10, and it gives me so much freedom to get on the ball, but it also allows me to get into the box and join the attack.
“With the goal here, and against Portsmouth, you could see I was able to get in the box almost as an extra striker and get on the end of it.
“I hope that can continue, and Myles’ cross was something he has got down to a fine art.
“I know when he is getting ready for that, I can make the gamble and make the run because he has the quality to pick me out.”
Cullen was also keen to praise the resilience the Swans showed during the closing stages, and believes it can prove to be an important result after extending the unbeaten run to four games.
“I think that can be a big win for us,” he added.
“We came into this game after two draws knowing we needed a big three points.
“The end of the game was not what we wanted, we had to grind it out but sometimes you have to do it and we were so solid at the end because we were desperate to get the win.”
