Korey Smith | I want to help Swansea City kick on
Korey Smith has his sights set on helping Swansea City kick on from their play-off disappointment as he eagerly awaits his first season in SA1.
The 29-year-old midfielder became the Swans first signing ahead of the 2020-21 season when he put pen to paper on a two-year contract at the Liberty Stadium on Friday.
He makes the move after six years at Bristol City, where he helped the Robins win promotion from the Championship to League One.
Earlier in his career he was also part of the Norwich sides that made it to the Championship and then the Premier League in consecutive seasons.
And, with head coach Steve Cooper making clear he is not satisfied after seeing the Swans miss out on the play-off final, Smith hopes he can help ensure Swansea keep developing and moving forward.
“I have not come here to have a holiday, I want to try and get this team back to the Premier League. That is my goal,” he said.
“Swansea had a good season last year, but I am here for a few years and I hope I can help the team get back to the Premier League.
“To do that you need good players, a good manager, and a club and fans that believe in you through the ups and downs, because it is not always smooth sailing.
“It’s about a mix of youth and experience, and I think that is one of the reasons the gaffer has brought me in.
“There are a lot of good young players, and a massive thing is that team bond, making sure everyone has the same goal and is on the same path.
“We have to work hard for each other, so I hope I can make an impression and bond with the boys in the dressing room and crack on from there.”
Smith was pleased to get his future sorted given the quick turnaround between the two seasons owing to the suspension of football earlier this year.
He was impressed by the vision laid out for him by Cooper, and revealed his young family are also excited to make the move to South Wales.
“I have a young family and I wanted to be able to get settled nice and quickly, I did not really want to wait around,” he said.
“When this opportunity came up, I jumped at it, to be honest.
“Me and my family are really excited to come down here. I have two young boys who cannot wait to get out on the beaches and enjoy the Joe’s ice cream we have been hearing so much about.
“We are looking forward to it.”
