Joel Piroe targeting another 20-goal season for Swansea City
Joel Piroe has his sights set on a second-straight 20-goal season for Swansea City after his brace helped his side to a 2-0 win against Wigan Athletic on Easter Monday.
Piroe’s 40th and 41st goal in total for the Swans since joining in the summer of 2021, also took his tally to 17 in all competitions for the current campaign.
And now he has his sights set on bagging 20 with five games remaining, which would make him the first Swansea player since Jason Scotland to reach the 20-goal milestone in consecutive seasons.
“I’m very pleased to score two and I’m very pleased with the 2-0 win,” said the Dutchman.
“The little downside is that I think I should have scored three, but I’ll stay positive.
“Before the game, I told myself ‘today’s the day’ I will hit 40 goals for the Swans so I’m very pleased and to make it 41 is even better.
"To make sure I get to 20 for the season is now the aim for me."
While Piroe was the star of the show, both goals were undoubtedly a team effort.
The second was a particularly fine flowing move which began at the back, included goalkeeper Andy Fisher, and was finished first-time by the striker.
“When we’re passing the way we did for the second goal, it’s perfect,” he added.
“Wigan tried to press very high, but we were able to make them chase the ball and in the end we were able to get through them and I was the spare man.
“We saw the patterns and how they tried to press us, but we saw as well where the spaces lay and, especially in the first half, I think Jamie [Paterson] was playing really well and they gave him the most space.
"He’s not the guy you want to give that much space to, so we found enough holes in the system to find the openings.
“We don’t want to slow down the momentum now. We just want to perform in every game.”
