Joel Piroe surpasses 50 career goals with brace against Northampton Town
Joel Piroe praised a controlled performance against Northampton Town after the Swansea City strikers’ 50th and 51st career goals helped the side reach the second round of the Carabao Cup.
Forty-six of those goals have come in Swans colours after hitting more than 20 in his two seasons in SA1, and the 24-year-old is already back among the goals.
He netted inside ten minutes finishing off a smart move down the Swans’ left and capitalising on good work by Ollie Cooper. He then doubled his tally shortly after half-time – this time with Liam Cullen assisting from the right.
A comfortable second half for the Swans followed with few chances for either team, but Josh Ginnelly wrapped up the match in injury time with a stunning 30-yard strike to mark his debut.
“I’m very pleased with the goals,” he said.
“It’s always nice to get a quick goal and pick up where you left off last season.
“I’m really happy to have reached 50 career goals. I didn’t think about it before going into the game, but I’m very pleased with it.
“I thought we played well, we didn’t give them chances really. We were tidy on the ball mostly.
“I think as the game continued after we were 2-0 up we got a little bit slow and sloppy but in the end we controlled it.
“I was very pleased for Josh to get off the mark as well. When I saw he was shaping to shoot, I was thinking ‘are you sure about it’ but he hit it perfectly.
“It’s a slightly different style to last season, but I don’t think it’s that big of a difference, we’re still trying to play. We’re just trying not to take certain risks in certain areas and that’s the main difference but overall I think we’re doing a great job adapting to a new system.
“I think we can still get better with the combinations up front, but we’re enjoying it as strikers.”
