Joe Allen | That performance wasn't good enough
Joe Allen admitted Swansea City's performance against Southampton wasn't good enough, and says the players have to take responsibility and do better.
The Swans had fashioned a couple of good chances before Joe Aribo’s deflected opener and were in the game at half-time, only for a mistake at the back to gift a second to the home side with Sam Edozie finishing from close range.
Substitute Ryan Fraser went on to net a brace after being introduced with 20 minutes remaining, before Che Adams added a fifth in injury time.
For Allen, 33, the game at St Mary’s marked his return from surgery on a groin injury as he appeared as a second-half substitute
But the defeat was certainly not the way the former Wales international had hoped to make his comeback.
“It feels like an eternity since I’ve been back on the grass," said Allen.
“It’s not the return I had in mind. It’s disappointing that we conceded the goals that we did.
“We all know that we have to do better, myself included. I think when the second goal went in; that really killed us in the game.
“We knew coming into this they were playing with motivation and with confidence, as they’re unbeaten in a really long time
“When you have a run like that, that’s natural to play with that confidence and they had that.
“Coming away from home against a tough team is always a test, especially when they’re in a good position, not just in the table but with confidence.
“There were moments where we proved we could hurt them and we showed some promising ideas, but we didn’t make the most of them.
“Again, there were a few glimpses in the first half where we could have nicked a goal, but then to go 1-0 down we were really disappointed.
“Coming out in the second half, we did have that belief to bring ourselves back in the game but giving that goal away early set them on their way."
