Swansea City midfielder Joe Allen has expressed his pride and gratitude after being named in the Wales squad for this month’s Nations League fixtures.

The 34-year-old announced his retirement from international football in February 2023 following the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, but has opted to return to the national set-up following talks with new Wales boss Craig Bellamy.

“I’m very proud to be back and grateful to be asked and have the opportunity,” explained Allen.

“I think there is a sense of duty when you get asked and I think the situation is a lot different from when I made the decision to retire a year and a half ago.

“I’m really looking forward to it and being back with the group.”

Wales travel to face Iceland on Friday October 11, and then return to Cardiff to host Montenegro on Monday, October 14 as they look to build on taking four points from their first two games under Bellamy’s stewardship.

“I’ve heard nothing but rave reviews from everyone so far and anyone who saw the first camps and the games can see the impact he’s looking to have and has had already on the team and the squad,” said Allen on Bellamy’s influence so far.

“It’s full of young players with so much potential so I’m looking forward to being a part of it and helping in any way I can.”

The Wales great has won 74 caps for his country to date, playing in three major tournaments along the way, and is looking forward to hopefully adding to that tally.

“It would mean a lot to get more caps. I think any player no matter how many they’ve got would be disappointed that they haven’t got more because you miss out on certain games whether it’s suspension, injuries or whatever.

“If I get the chance to add to that tally it would be brilliant and I’m looking forward to pushing to possibly get some minutes and some game time.

“The onus is on any more senior or experienced player to try and bring value and help in any way you can.

“Hopefully my example can be something that can be positive and can be good but equally I’m looking forward to getting back in there and learning from some of the other lads as well.”
