Joe Allen believes Swansea City should be excited by the challenge of facing Premier League opposition when they travel to face Southampton on Sunday (4.30pm).

The Swans take on the Saints at St Mary’s in the third round of the Emirates FA Cup, as Championship hostilities briefly pause for a special weekend in the football calendar.

Luke Williams’ team take on a Southampton side who have had a tough season to date in the top-flight. Allen expects a tough test on the south coast but feel Swansea can travel with confidence following some of their showings over the festive period.

“I think we can go into the game with confidence. I think if you look at our games against QPR and Luton recently, I thought we were fantastic,” said the Wales international.

“I think we showed in those performances what we are capable of, and that is what we are striving to be like week in and week out.

“We are going to try and use the confidence from those results and performances in going away to a Premier League club.

“It is certainly not an easy game, they might feel a bit more pressure to perform and get a win than we do, but we will see what happens and I think it’s a game to look forward to and an opportunity to be excited by.”
