Jerry Yates | It's a good start, what the gaffer wants is music to my ears
Jerry Yates hopes his goal against Morecambe is just the start, with the striker admitting new head coach Luke Williams’ vow to produce an exciting, attacking Swansea City team is music to his ears.
Charlie Patino scored the opener early in the second half of the third-round FA Cup tie and, with Andy Fisher’s goal largely unthreatened, Yates’ late volley secured a place in the hat for Monday night’s fourth-round draw.
It was a good start for new Swansea boss Williams, and Yates felt the performance against Morecambe was a positive first step.
“We’re buzzing to be through,” he said.
“We knew before the game that it was going to be tough. We knew they’d make it hard and sit in and we were going to have to break them down. So it was good to get a victory and be in the hat for the next round.
“We’ve played some great stuff, and I probably should have had a couple more if I’d been a bit sharper to the ball.
“For the goal, I saw the shot was on, took that chance and aimed between the defenders legs and it’s gone in.”
Williams was in charge of his first game after taking training for the first time on Friday, and the head coach made a point of thanking Alan Sheehan, Kris O’Leary and Martyn Margetson for their work preparing the side during the week.
And Yates is already excited by Williams’ vision for the team.
“The gaffer’s been unbelievable,” he added.
“He’s had individual chats with everyone, he’s filled everyone with confidence. He wants everyone to know their roles and patterns and it’s looking positive.
“He came in the first day and in his first meeting he said we want to score goals and win games, it’s music to my ears and only after two days we’ve got a couple of goals, and heading into the weekend we want to push on further.
“Back-to-back wins is essential, and builds confidence within the group. I’m sure we’ll try to take that into Saturday against Birmingham.”
