Jerry Yates | It was great to score, but I'd have preferred three points
Swansea City striker Jerry Yates may have opened his goalcoring account at the first attempt, but the summer signing would have been happier to mark his debut with three points against Birmingham City.
Yates helped the Swans secure a point on the opening day of the season, finishing off a sweeping move also involving Matt Grimes and Liam Cullen.
It drew the hosts level after Siriki Dembele had given the visitors the lead following a defensive error at the end of the first half.
“It’s a nice feeling on a personal note, but I am more bothered about the result to be honest,” said Yates of his goal.
“The spirit we showed was excellent and we battled hard. We would have liked a bit more but we will take the point and move on from there.
“People can crumble when the pressure is on or things have gone wrong, but the lads continued to play football and we had the right mentality to get the goal back.
“It’s a massive feeling (to score), there is a lot to improve on obviously so it’s now a case of getting back out on the training ground.”
The Swansea.com Stadium encounter also gave Yates his first experience of playing in front of the Jack Army in a competitive fixture on home turf, and he relished it.
“The fans were loud and proud, and the very least you can do is go out and work hard for them,” he added.
“We put our all into it and got the goal, but we want to win games for them.”
