Jamie Sherwood | We asked for a reaction and we got one

First-team manager Jamie Sherwood was delighted with the reaction from his Swansea City Women side after they returned to winning ways against Wrexham at the Racecourse.

Stacey John-Davis headed the Swans in front with her first goal of the season, converting a great ball by Robyn Pinder.

Ava Suckley would level for the hosts after Wrexham won the ball back high up the pitch, allowing her to convert from close range.

Jess Williams got the Swans back in front after the break, powering home a header from a great delivery by Katy Hosford, before Katie Sharp put the ball into her own net 16 minutes later to make it 3-1.

Rosie Hughes pulled back what would prove to be consolation goal for the hosts as she headed home from a corner, but couldn’t stop Swans maintaining their unbeaten start to the season.

Sherwood felt his side gave him the response that he had asked for following their draw against Barry Town United Women, and was delighted with the problems his side caused the Wrexham defence.

“It’s a massive three points, we asked for a reaction from last week and I think we’ve seen that,” he said.

“We’ve got goals on the board, created opportunities and should probably have taken more of them to make the scoreline easier on the heart for Swansea fans. But it’s positive, I’m over the moon and the girls should be really proud.

“We stuck to our identity and the way we want to play football, we’ve come to a tough ground and played some really nice football in tough conditions against a tough team.

“I wouldn’t call it a bounce back, I would say it was a continuation of what we did, we didn’t do anything different to last week, we just took our chances and scored goals.

“We caused the opposition difficulties in their box, which we didn’t do last week, we got across defenders and attacked the ball and it was really nice to see the girls get what they deserve.

“In the 95th minute we’ve got players running hard to recover the ball so we are really proud of every single player.

“We showed that resilience and it’s really pleasing to come to a ground steeped with history and score three goals on our travels, that’s an amazing thing to do.”
