Jamie Sherwood v Cardiff Met

Swansea City Women first-team manager Jamie Sherwood felt the hard work his side had put in over pre-season had been important in their 2-1 win over Cardiff Met.

The Swans fell behind after four minutes in their Genero Adran Premier opener, with a long-range strike from Chelsea Cochrane giving Cardiff Met the lead.

But Danielle Broadhurst would respond seven minutes later, capitalising on a loose ball in the box to tap home her first goal for the Swans from close range.

Stacey John-Davis then netted the decisive goal just before the break, receiving the ball outside the box before lobbing the goalkeeper.

Sherwood was pleased with his side’s first-half performance, and praised the resilience they showed.

"The objective was to get three points, the objective for the first half was to be in control of the game and we did that," said Sherwood.

"The dominance in the first half was apparent in territory, possession, shots on goal, set-pieces in the attacking taking third, we were very much in the ascendancy.

"The second half we didn't quite achieve the things we wanted to and it allowed Met to impose themselves upon us.

"But the girls showed their resilience, they showed the work that they've done off the ball through pre-season and that is what ground out the result.

"The first half was really positive, second half showed obviously we've got to work, but the objective at the beginning of the game was three points and that's what we've got.

"We want a group of players that are robust and dynamic, that believe in what they are doing and believe in each other, and that's what they showed after going behind.

"We went down but we've shown resilience there.”

Sherwood also praised John-Davis after the experienced forward marked her return from injury with a trademark goal.

Stacey [John-Davis] was one of the reasons a came to the club, there were a number of players here that I wanted to work with and she is one of them,” said Sherwood.

"To see her come back from injury and see everything she has done off the pitch and away from training, just getting herself ready to be in a playing capacity, you've got to take your hat off to her.”
