Jamie Paterson claps fans after Bristol City

Russell Martin says Jamie Paterson is pushing for a starting spot in Swansea City’s clash with Wigan Athletic, while the head coach has backed his senior players to step up in the absence of skipper Matt Grimes.

Paterson recently returned from a spell on the sidelines with a groin injury, and provided sharpness and impetus from the bench in the midweek defeat at Preston.

Martin acknowledged the attacking midfielder is in contention to return to the starting line-up, although he believes the former Bristol City man will also benefit from the upcoming World Cup break.

“Pato is very close to a start, he did great and was sharp when he came on the other night,” said Martin.

“We need to build him up in terms of fitness, and he is one who will benefit from the World Cup break, and we can build that sharpness and fitness.

“It is great having his energy and personality around the place.”

The Swans will be without Grimes as he serves a one-match suspension for picking up a fifth booking of the season.

Matt Grimes Cardiff

Martin acknowledged his side will miss the midfielder, who has played every minute of league action since his appointment as head coach, but feels his squad has the strength and depth to perform.

“Grimesy will be a miss, but we have strength and depth, the bench has been really strong these last few games.

“Jay Fulton has been in his best form since we’ve been here.

“It’s not easy asking older players to play a certain away and put aside any scar tissue they may have from earlier in their careers, but he has bounced back from his disappointment last season incredibly and we are grateful for that.

“The onus is on Jay and one or two others to replace what Grimes brings, but I am confident we will do that and be fine.”
