Ian Owen hailed Swansea City Ladies’ “outstanding” display as they beat defending champions Cardiff Met on the opening weekend of the Welsh Premier Women’s League.

Stacey John-Davis’ second-half strike proved the difference as the visitors claimed victory at Cyncoed Campus.

Last season’s runners-up and League Cup finalists made the perfect start to the campaign in a hugely encouraging performance against the treble winners.

And Owen, who has added the likes of Wales internationals Deanna Lewis, Hannah Miles and Chloe Chivers along with five other acquisitions to his squad, was delighted with the performance and result as the Swans recorded their first win over Met since January 2017.

“I thought every player who took to the field played for the badge, which is what we always ask for,” said Owen. “We were outstanding, and this very pleasing considering it was the first game of the campaign. The performance from start to finish was tremendous.

“Our philosophy hasn’t changed - we still want to play the Swansea Way. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

“We’ve made a few additions to the squad and young Deanna, who was making her debut, was fantastic in goal. She didn’t have a great deal to do but her presence was there for everyone to see.

“I think we’ve just developed our game and brought a little more intensity, and that was evident in our performance and result.”
