Head coach Martin hails Joel Piroe after reaching 40 goals for Swansea City
Russell Martin hailed the poise and quality of Joel Piroe after the Dutchman took his tally for Swansea City through the 40-goal barrier in victory at Wigan Athletic.
The Dutchman was the matchwinner at the DW Stadium as he bagged a first-half brace in a 2-0 victory, to help the Swans make it 10 points from the last 12 available.
The goals were trademark Piroe finishes, both first time, both left-footed and both sent unerringly into the bottom corner.
The first, from a Jamie Paterson pass and Joe Allen lay-off, was his 40th since joining from PSV Eindhoven.
And he then rounded off a superb team move, that had started with keeper Andy Fisher, to double the lead and take his goal total for the season to 17.
“Joel has been amazing since we have been here, he is just a great young man, first and foremost,” said head coach Martin.
“As a footballer, he is adaptable and intelligent. He is technically really gifted with both feet and good movement.
“His willingness and capacity to learn is incredible, and his understanding of what we are trying to do is amazing.
“I am just so pleased for him, because he has been disappointed himself with how things have gone for him in spells this season, and his output in terms of goals.
“But it shows his ability, the quality he possesses and it tells you how good he is that he can be disappointed when he has 17 goals this season.”
