Ewan Griffiths | We stuck together and got the rewards
Ewan Griffiths produced several eye-catching saves as Swansea City Under-18s claimed a second-straight Professional Development League Cup win, but the goalkeeper insists any praise should be shared among the collective.
The 10-man Swans made it back-to-back wins in the cup after Thomas Woodward's first-half strike proved the difference against Bournemouth at the Canford Park Arena.
Sixteen-year-old Woodward netted the winner late in the first period following a fine team move, and the Swans prevailed as they held on to secure a clean sheet at the other end despite a late red card for Jack Fanning.
But it could have been different if not for the efforts of Wales youth international Griffiths, who captained the Swans, even through he was forced off by a calf injury with 20 minutes still to play.
However, the 18-year-old was more than happy to share the credit with his teammates for the clean sheet, and praised substitute Kit Margetson for how he handled the closing stages.
"At the end of the day, as a goalkeeper, that's my job," said Griffiths of his efforts.
"It was also an honour to captain the side today, it meant a lot. Making a lot of stops, you need to be quick on your feet and think fast. I've been working hard with Paul [Whitfield] and I feel like my hard work paid off.
"I was gutted to come off, especially after the boys were putting in a great shift and I felt confident, but Kit [Margetson] did incredible when he came on.
"But it's not just about the saves we make as keepers. The boys showed real fight and full credit to them. The second half was much better and we stuck together. We all came together and that's what we can do when we play for each other."
