Donation of over £13,000 made to Maggie’s Swansea as part of Tackling Cancer Together campaign
Swansea City, Swansea Building Society and Westacres have made an initial donation of £13,251 to Maggie’s Swansea as part of the season-long Tackling Cancer Together campaign.
The initial payment – which represents a portion of the fundraising through sales of the Swans’ eye-catching pink third kit, as well as a further £1,500 donation from the club – was delivered to our official charity partner ahead of Christmas.
Further donations will follow in the new year, with the campaign set to continue until the end of the 2023-24 season.
The cheque was presented at the club’s City Business Network (CBN) Christmas Countdown event on Tuesday (December 12), with Maggie’s Swansea centre fundraising manager, Lucia Osmond, on hand to accept the donation.
The Tackling Cancer Together campaign is centred around the Swans’ third shirt, which is adorned in different coloured spots representing the ribbons associated with some of the most common types of cancer.
Each spot also signifies an individual cancer journey with supporters able to add their own stories to the shirt via the club’s official website. When the Swans wear the pink shirt we carry all of these stories, which serve as a reminder that no one should face cancer alone, with us.
Speaking at the event, Lucia explained the importance of the collaboration with the club, not just as a means of fundraising, but also for its efforts in raising awareness of the charity’s incredible and life-changing work throughout the city.
“I want to say a massive thank you, because we cannot do what we do at Maggie’s without the support of the community,” she said.
“This partnership with the football club is so important to us and has allowed us to do more for people living with cancer in the local area.
“The Tackling Cancer Together really works, not just from a fundraising point of view, but for awareness and helping us reach more people.
“We’ve been in Swansea for 13 years, but there are still people who haven’t accessed the free support that we offer.
“The club has been fantastic, they’ve been to the centre, interviewed our staff and got to know what we do; and awareness is just as important as fundraising.
“A sum of £700,000 is what we need to raise next year so that we can continue to do what we do. That’s a very high figure, particularly in the current climate, and we want to thank everyone who supports us.”
Ian Morgan, managing director of Westacres, added: “We’re massively proud to be part of this campaign and to support Maggie’s.
“We hope the donation we’ve made will help Maggie’s continue its fantastic work from a great local charity.”
Jane Parker, area manager of Swansea, Neath and Port Talbot at Swansea Building Society echoed that sentiment.
“We’ve been a charity partner of Maggie’s for a couple of years, so we know how valuable this donation at this time of year will be,” she said.
“We’re looking forward to continuing the campaign into the new year.”
Christmas Countdown was the final CBN event of 2023, and brought together local companies and club partners to network and share best practices in order to strengthen the network of businesses across the city.
Each CBN event differs to offer a broad scope of benefits to its members, with the Christmas event offering opportunities for business leaders to present the innovative and interesting ways their companies work in Swansea.
