On this day | Swans clinch play-off win
Terry Yorath’s team had booked a place in the play-offs by finishing sixth in the fourth tier.
That meant they faced Third Division Rotherham initially, for this was the time when the play-offs saw teams chasing promotion take on sides fighting relegation from the league above.
The Swans saw off the Millers over two legs to set up a two-legged play-off final against Torquay United.
The Gulls came to Wales on May 25 and were beaten 2-1 in a bruising game.
Sean McCarthy and substitute Ian Love put the Swans 2-0 up before Jim McNichol pulled a goal back late on for Torquay.
The second leg was a 3-3 thriller, which meant the Swans went up thanks to a 5-4 aggregate triumph.
