On this day | Millennium heartbreak
Swansea City suffered play-off final heartbreak against Barnsley at the Millennium Stadium on May 27, 2006.
Having won promotion in the Swans’ final campaign at Vetch Field, Kenny Jackett’s side had enjoyed a fine 2005-06 season in the third tier.
They finished the regular season in sixth place, and beat Brentford 3-1 on aggregate in the play-off semi-finals.
That set up a trip to Cardiff – Wembley was being rebuilt at the time – to take on Barnsley, who had seen off Huddersfield in their semi-final.
The Tykes struck first through Paul Hayes, but the Swans levelled thanks to a spectacular Rory Fallon goal.
Andy Robinson gave the Swans the lead before the break but former Vetch loanee Danny Nardiello made it 2-2 just after the hour mark.
Alan Tate and Lee Trundle both missed big chances to win it for Jackett’s men before a painful penalty shootout.
Tate and Bayo Akinfenwa then both missed their spot-kicks and Barnsley were promoted.
