Connor Roberts | Italian job the perfect test
Connor Roberts believes Atalanta provided Swansea City with the perfect test ahead of the big Championship kick-off next week.
Steve Cooper’s side came from behind to beat the Italians 2-1 thanks to an own goal and Roberts’ header at the Liberty.
Atalanta, who will play Champions League football this season after a third-placed finish in Serie A, looked good value for their 1-0 lead at the break.
But the Swans were much improved in the second half as a Hans Hateboer own goal in the 63rd minute and Roberts’ header four minutes later settled a closely-fought encounter.
Following victories over Mansfield Town, Crawley Town, Yeovil Town, Exeter City and Bristol Rovers, the latest triumph makes it a perfect six out of six for Cooper’s side.
And Roberts feels the Swans are in a good place as they move towards next Saturday’s Championship opener with Hull City in SA1.
“It was a very tough game. They showed how good they are in the first half,” said the Wales international.
“In the first half they had a lot of the ball, but in the second half I think our fitness showed. In large patches I thought we were very good.
“The boys had to dig in and we worked very hard to win the game.
“It was a really big test, a perfect one in many ways, to help prepare us for next week.
“We have had a new gaffer and staff, so to start off with six wins is brilliant but the proper work starts next week.”
