Chris Church | We were ruthless, and that needs to continue
Interim head coach Chris Church called for Swansea City Women to maintain their ruthless streak after a 5-0 win over Cardiff Met in the Genero Adran Trophy quarter-finals gave them a perfect start to 2024.
Katy Hosford gave the Swans the lead early on after turning on the edge of the box and finding the bottom corner.
Stacey John-Davis doubled the lead from the penalty spot after Hosford was brought down in the box, while Robyn Pinder made it three before the break with a stunning curling effort from outside the box.
Chloe Chivers hit a quickfire double after the break, tapping home a great ball from Sophie Brisland-Hancocks before firing a low shot into the bottom-left corner just four minutes later as the hosts booked a semi-final spot in emphatic fashion.
Church was delighted with Swansea had started the new year, and felt the ruthless nature they showed will be crucial heading into the second half of the season.
“It’s a great start to the new year, that performance was exactly what we wanted,” said Church.
“I felt our defensive game was spot on, it took us about 10 minutes to get it going but, once we did, we caused them all sorts of problems.
“We want to make sure that every player is scoring, and everyone is chipping in, it’s not just about the front three.
“I think we are right where we need to be, we set the target to be challenging on all fronts, it’s now about keeping this consistency and being ruthless in the bigger games.
“It’s big to win in the manner that we did. There’s always a little bit of worry when you have a break, two weeks away is quite a bit of time away for any kind of footballer.
“But we picked up right where we left off and I can’t fault the players.
“Now we have to continue to hit those standards.”
