Charlie Patino | This has to be the start for us
Charlie Patino wants Swansea City’s victory over Sheffield Wednesday to provide a platform to build on.
Patino put the icing on the cake with a deft finish to make it 3-0 and round off the scoring against the Owls, shortly after Jerry Yates had made it 2-0 in the second half.
Jamal Lowe had opened the scoring from the penalty spot in the first-half.
It was Patino’s first goal for the club, and helped secure a first league win under head coach Michael Duff, but the midfielder is determined to help ensure this is only the start for the Swans.
“We’ve had a tough start, but to play in front of the fans, get the three points and clean sheet was important,” he said.
“We’re delighted, but it’s a start for us and I think the vibe in the camp after that win will push us on now.
“We don’t celebrate now, we’re back to work on Monday ready for the next game.
“There’s no hiding that it hasn’t been the best start with the results. We’ve been 1-0 up in a few games and haven’t been able to get the second goal, but we have this time.
“This is the start and now we have to push on and work hard”
Patino also had words of thanks for the Jack Army for their vocal support in roaring the side on to victory, and believes they were part of Swansea’s impressive pressing game against Wednesday.
“We worked on pressing during the week, pressing from the front and using the midfield to get higher and the defence to get higher,” he said.
“Ultimately that starts at the front and that was massive for us, it set the tempo for the game and got the crowd behind us.
“When they’re behind us, we believe we can beat any team.
“To have the fans behind you backing you is really nice and we’re going to need them everywhere we go, home and away. They’ve been with us at all the games, we’re really grateful for that, they’ve stayed with us and hopefully we’ll kick on from here.”
Patino – who joined on a season-long loan from Arsenal during the summer – has registered three assists and one goal in his first six outings for the Swans, but his focus is only on improving the team.
“I’m delighted with the goal, I want to kick on from here,” he added.
“I’ve got three or four assists already, I’m just trying to help the team as much as possible.
“Individually, I’m pleased with my goals and assists, it’s nice to get stats like that, but ultimately the most important thing is the team and we haven’t had the best of starts.
“I just want to keep helping the team.”
